Custom Ketubahs

The Ketubah, or Jewish marriage contract, is a central part of the Jewish wedding. In recent years, the age-old tradition of having an illuminated Ketubah has been revived. It can be a personal expression of the beauty of the marriage. Whether a print or an original, Julie’s work turns this important document into art that can be displayed as a constant celebration of the wedding day.

Before the Mezuzah is affixed to one’s door-post, one recites the following B’rachah: “Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us with His Commandments and has commanded us to Affix the Mezuzah.” The Mezuzah case, with its scroll inside, is then nailed or screwed or glued to the upper third of the right side of the door frame, leaning inward towards the interior of the house or the room.

This is an original Ketubah, painted with Bombay I This is an original Ketubah, painted with Bombay India inks and highlighted with both White Pearl acrylic and Metallic Gold ink. It features the Boston Museum of Fine Arts Zen Garden, where the groom proposed; as well as the state flowers of Massachusetts (Trailing Arbutus), New York (Rose), and Ohio (Carnation), representing the cities where the couple now lives as well as where they were each from originally. Above the text, is a Tallit as their Chuppah, with a quote from the Sheva Brachot above that, and their Hebrew names in the corners. The text is hand lettered in Aramaic and Hebrew with lines for seven signatures.

Finished and ready for matting… This Ketubah is Finished and ready for matting…
This Ketubah is based off of a chalk drawing by the groom’s late grandmother. The image was of a lake where his grandparents lived, and where his late grandfather took him fishing. You can see the chalk drawing is very clearly part of the design, and yet the other added elements transform it into something different; a combined representation for - and of - the bride and groom together.

Many people choose to commission an original Ketub Many people choose to commission an original Ketubah – a Jewish wedding contract. If you are planning a Ketubah, the process would begin with our meeting by phone or in person. We will discuss ideas, places, dreams and other things that are important to the couple. We talk about colors, shapes and images, as well as quotes, and elements that are meaningful. From these thoughts and from sketches I make as we talk, the basic layout, or design begins to unfold. Together, we will come up with a plan for the Ketubah you truly want.

We will also discuss text options – such as the version of the text being used, and whether you prefer Hebrew only, or English as well. Shape of the text as well as the number of signatures needed is also important.

After we have spoken, I will come up with a rough sketch or two for approval. We will use these sketches to work towards creating the exact piece you are hoping for to reflect the marriage. After the rough sketch is approved, I sharpen the image using colored pencils within a tightened line drawing. At this point I would need all information related to filling in the text.

I can also enhance your piece with gold illumination using either metallic gold ink or 23K gold leaf. When completed, it will be shipped or delivered to you with a mat, unless agreed to otherwise.

This Ketubah is based on a chalk art piece by the This Ketubah is based on a chalk art piece by the groom’s grandmother. The text has been hand lettered over the body of water, and now I get to begin the art surrounding it.
It will be reminiscent of the original piece, and will also contain new and different elements showcasing parts of the couple’s life together. I love getting to incorporate life stories into my art. So excited to see this vision come together for these two!
