Last week, Wednesday afternoon: We had seen the p

Last week, Wednesday afternoon:
We had seen the prison camp ghetto of Theresienstadt. Next was our walk to find the cemetery and crematorium. Not an easy task. Not physically. Not emotionally.
A lot of walking, trying to figure out where we were going. A lot of introspection and thoughts about our day.
We said Kaddish. We lit memorial candles. Beth sang the memorial prayer for those who were killed in the Holocaust. And then the long walk back to the bus stop.
We waited a long time for our bus back to Prague, hoping it would actually arrive. When it did, we boarded and sank into our seats. A meaningful and somber afternoon.

As a light reprieve in our heavy day, and since we needed lunch, we stopped at the “ParkHotel Restaurant”, for some veggie burgers and beer. It did not disappoint. Very good beer and burgers, and we were served by a kitty robot!

Wednesday last week…
Our group of four took the bus from Prague to Terezin / Litomerice. Although not a death camp, the weight of visiting a Concentration and Forced Labor Camp, was pretty intense. The small fortress was originally built in the late 1700’s and named for Maria Theresa. From 1940-1945, it served as a prison for opponents of the Nazi regime as well as for Jews and Gypsies. We had a tour, and also did a self guided tour of some of the exhibits. Heavy day…

Tuesday evening, we were fortunate enough to be able to attend the Estates Theater to see the opera Don Giovanni, which was first performed at THIS opera house, and conducted by Mozart himself in 1787. We had never been to an opera before. Truly magical. 🎶🎶🎶

We walked halfway down Petrin Hill and had an amazing lunch… right next to the funicular stop - smoked salmon and avocados to start, followed by a delicious fish called Zander (perch family) in a sweet chili oil. The view was glorious and we were refreshed to walk the rest of the way down.

Tuesday last week, was the day we took the Funicular up to the top of Petrin Hill in Prague… first stop - the Lookout Tower, modeled after the Eiffel Tower. We climbed the 299 steps to the top observation platform, to find an amazing view of the city below…

We walked back across the Charles Bridge, still so beautiful looking out over the Vltava River, and then realized we needed dinner. We found an amazing restaurant with a table right on the river, (with a view of Petrin Hill where we were headed on Tuesday), and after a lovely meal, we walked back to our hotel. Beautiful way to start our time in Prague.

Still last Monday, Prague, and hard to believe it’s only one short week ago. We walked to the Charles Bridge, a medieval stone arch pedestrian bridge, crossing the Vltava River. About a third of a mile long. We walked across and explored the other side.

Because of lack of space, it was necessary to cover existing graves with new earth so others could be placed on top. Founded in the 15th century, it is historical, peaceful, meaningful….
